PHI - Anything can happen, says confident Tiu

WUHAN (FIBA Asia Championship) - Philippinesguard Chris Tiu hasn't forgotten where he has come from, and he knows exactly where he wants to go.
Representing his country at the Olympic Games would complete a long journey that almost every Philippine boy dreams of taking. "I grew up playing on the village courts, asphalt with no roof, playing against bigger guys," he said.
"There's people playing in slippers or whatever, that's the way it is back home. People just love basketball and I am really proud to be given the chance to represent my country."

FIBA Asia – Things getting interesting in Asia

WUHAN (FIBA Asia Championship) – While the FIBA Asia Championship has been running for five days, the chase for the title and a place at the London Olympics is now starting to get interesting.

On Day 6, the final day of the Second Round, the three remaining undefeated teams – ChinaIran andKorea – face tough challenges in an appetising evening of basketball that will make the London equation a little clearer.

“I think we will find out more from tomorrow. It is too early to tell,” said Korea coachJae Hur of his own team’s form, before being asked which of his main rivals appear to be travelling the best. “I think Iran is the better team, but it is really too early to tell.”

Swingmen Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz were originally ruled ineligible for the tournament, but after an appeal were reinstated in time for the Second Round, reinvigorating the team with their physical defence that eventually wore Japan down, and giving the Philippines genuine hopes of medal.

After a successful came from behind victory over Jordan the Philippine Team is now set to land at the 2nd top spot on their group behind from league leader China.
With the complete line-up that the Smart Gilas have now in place, they will have a big chance to play head to head against Japan who had defeated Jordan earlier also during the first round of elimination. Japanese shooters were deadly from the three point range, this is just one of the concerns for the Philippine team.
Japan had defeated earlier UAE at 101-61 during their first game in the second round of the tournament. Top scoring for Japan against UAE was Tomoo Amino with a total of 17 points. Kosuke Takeuchi had also contributed a total of 15 points.

Smart Gilas vs. Jordan Final Score 72-64 Philippines Won

Smart Gilas Pilipinas showed the Asian crowd that they were indeed one of the team to beat in the 2011 FIBA Asia Mens Basketball Championship. The Philippine Team defeated Jordan with a final score at 72-64 to start their campaign in the second round with a morale booster win.
One of the surprises of the game between Jordan and the Philippines was the clarification of eligibility of Filipino-American Lassiter and Lutz to finally suit up for the team. FIBA had already approved that the two Filipinos were eligible to play but it was not cleared to the FIBA Asia officials.
Before the start of the game, the coaching staff were so confused why is it that Lassiter and Lutz were still not eligible but after a call from the highest FIBA officials, the eligibility of the two Filipinos were finally cleared and the two were able to contribute for the team.

Official Weights and Photos

In front of a jam-packed crowd, the boxers featured in the Star Power event finally tipped the scales to show the boxing world their official weights prior to the fight. Notable people who joined the boxers in the weigh-in were Golden Boy Promotions owner Oscar De La Hoya and CEO Richard Schaefer, Michael Buffer as the announcer, Keith Kaizer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the official weights and Jose Sulaiman, the president of World Boxing Council.

Official weights:
Jessie Vargas - 142 lbs vs. Josesito Lopez - 140.5 lbs
Erik Morales - 140 lbs vs. Pablo Cesar Cano - 140 lbs
Victor Ortiz - 147 lbs vs Floyd Mayweather - 146 1/2 lbs

Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz Full Fight Part 1

It’s the 4th round. Mayweather hurts Ortiz early in the round. Ortiz makes a huge comeback, but intentionally headbutts Mayweather while on the ropes. Referee, Joe Cortez takes an immediate takes a point away from Ortiz, who then hugs Mayweather during the break in action. Cortez resumes the action, Mayweather comes to hug Ortiz, who drops his hands, and Mayweather lands a left and a right that sent Ortiz down and out. That is likely the simplest way to explain one of the most bizarre endings to a major fight in recent history. As the days continue, more will be discussed about the ending to this fight.

However, before the ending of the fight, Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz combined to give the sold out fans at the MGM Grand a tremendous action packed fight. From the first round, Mayweather planted his feet and was willing to exchange with the younger Champion. Ortiz seemed shocked at first and looked lost at times early in the bout. However, Ortiz proved his will and heart everytime it seemed as if Mayweather was ready to put a major beatdown on Ortiz.

With the win, Mayweather remains undefeated at 42-0 (26 KOs) and reclaims his WBC Welterweight title. Ortiz falls to 29-3-2 (22 KOs), but based on the crowd response after the fight, Ortiz’s stock as a star boxer as risen. The main event capped a tremendous night of boxing mixed with good fights, history, controversy, and of course the ending to the Mayweather-Ortiz bout.
